SHOW #1: STEELHEAD TROUT Noted fly fishing guide and fly tier Greg Senyo of Steelhead Alley Outfitters guides the Outdoors Ohio gang on Conneaut Creek, a world class steelhead trout fishery. Catching big trout are Cleveland Indians President Paul Dolan and his son, Peter, 13. Joe Thomas bags one of the big trout of the day with a little help from Middlefield, Ohio guide Patrick Robinson.
SHOW #2: NORTHERN PIKE FISHING Northern pike are a rare catch around Ohio. D’Arcy and Joe hooked a few toothy pike while fishing the Bass Classic tournament for United Way last summer on Lake Evans, in eastern Ohio. The guys returned this spring with northern pike on their minds and found success with local walleye fishing expert Sammy Cappelli of Youngstown – and even hooked a bonus lunker largemouth bass.
SHOW #3: PARTY BOATS FOR PERCH and SPRING WALLEYE The yellow perch are biting on Lake Erie, and Joe and D’Arcy and Laura Egan join a perch party at Tibbel’s Marina on Marblehead to get in on the action. They head out on the Tibbel’s party boat, the Miss Jackie, and have lots of fun catching enough for a fish fry. Joe and D’Arcy also test the spring walleye fishing on the Western Lake Erie reefs with noted walleye tournament pro Tommy Skarlis of Waukon, Iowa, the winner of the 2008 FLW Walleye Tour Championship.
SHOW #4: PHEASANTS ARE FLUSHING FOR D’ARCY AND JOE The pheasant hunting is great in the fall, winter and spring at the Cahlik Hunting Preserve in Orwell, Ohio. Owner Greg Cahlik welcomes D’Arcy and Joe and their Labrador retrievers, Bluebelle and Maddie, for a bird hunting adventure. Joining them is another of Joe’s hunting buddies, Cleveland Browns center Hank Fraley, who brings along his young Chesapeake Bay retriever, Casey.
SHOW #5: CANADA GEESE ARE PLENTIFUL AROUND OHIO John Beckwith and Brian Laux of the Crooked River Guide Service has the goose game down pat, and are a couple of dynamite goose callers who bring the big birds in close. D’Arcy and Joe have a great morning in the goose fields, despite some cold and chilly weather. Joining them is avid hunter Ryan Tucker, offensive lineman with Thomas on the Cleveland Browns. Joe and D’Arcy also check in with Nicole Roberts, the Eveready expert who has the latest in LED lights for hunters, anglers and outdoorsmen.
SHOW #6: TROLLING FOR TROPHY WALLEYE Tournament fisherman Gary Zart of Hinckley, Ohio takes Joe and D’Arcy out on Lake Erie to show them the latest trolling techniques for trophy walleye. Despite rough and rowdy weather early in the fishing day, the boys catch plenty of walleye – and get a big bonus. Joe’s quest for a 10-pound walleye is realized, as he hauls in the heaviest walleye of the day while fishing near Kelleys Island.
SHOW #7: SMALLMOUTH BASS AND DOG TRAINING TIPS D’Arcy goes after “smallies” on Lake Erie with legendary videographer Glen Lau, a Lake Erie pioneer as a guide on the big waters in the 1950s. Known for his landmark film, “Bigmouth,” about largemouth bass, Glen Lau talks about the old days on Lake Erie, when there were only a handful of fishing guides. Joe and his Labrador retriever, Maddie, team up for a training session in the bird fields.
SHOW #8: COOKING YOUR CATCH Big Joe Thomas loves to eat, and he has plenty of opportunities this week on the Outdoors Ohio television show. The All-Pro Cleveland Browns lineman and his wife, Annie, share the outdoor cooking fun with co-hosts D’Arcy and Laura Egan. Glazed Steelhead Trout, Walleye Parmesan and Beer-Battered Yellow Perch, all freshly caught from Lake Erie, are on the menu.
SHOW #9: TURKEY QUEST 2009 The spring turkey hunting season was a series of peaks and valleys for Joe and D’Arcy. There was some success and a few non-productive days in the turkey woods this season. There was also an effort to tag a gobbler the most challenging way - by hunting with Ten Point crossbows after learning some tips and tricks at the Ten Point Crossbow factory in Suffield, Ohio.
SHOW #10: LARGEMOUTH ON LAKE EVANS The boys tackle the O’Charley’s United Way Bass Classic tournament on Lake Evans in the Youngstown area. D’Arcy and Joe not only catch their limit of largemouth bass, but also check in Joe’s lunker 4-pound, 6-ounce largemouth bass, the top fish in the amateur division of the prestigious benefit bass tournament.
SHOW #11: LAKE ERIE PERCH Joe, D’Arcy and Laura Egan can’t resist a Lake Erie perch trip, or the chance to stock the freezer with this delicacy. Join them while anchored over the big schools found off Kelleys Island, and enjoy a lazy day of trading emerald shiner minnows for yellow perch that are eager to bite.
SHOW #12: SPORTING CLAYS Clay target games are a lot of fun for sportsmen who want to improve their skills with a shotgun. The most challenging of all is sporting clays, often called “golf with a shotgun” because the shooter moves from station to unique station. Showing off one of the top courses in northern Ohio is Jamie Gardner, manager of the WR Hunt Club in Clyde, Ohio. Gardner gives Joe and D’Arcy a tour of the sporting clays course and tips on breaking high-flying – and sometimes bouncing - clay targets.
SHOW #13: WALLEYE AND LAKE ERIE TOURISM About seven million people visit the Lake Erie Shores & Islands area each year. Tourism official Larry Fletcher joins D’Arcy and Joe for a walleye fishing trip, and tells viewers about all of the attractions they can enjoy in this unique area. While the guys are familiar with the great fishing, Fletcher has some inside information on year-round fun for the whole family.
SHOW #14: FISH OHIO DAY and KIDS FISHING DERBY D’Arcy takes a Lake Erie boat ride with Sen. George Voinovoich on Governor’s Fish Ohio Day, giving them a chance to talk about the big lake, its past and future, and even catch a few walleye! Joe had a dad and some uncles to get him started as a fisherman, and the Cleveland Browns All-Pro lineman wants to share that heritage. With help from Cleveland Browns team mates, Joe holds the inaugural Westlake Kids Fishing Derby for home town kids.
SHOW #15: CONCEALED CARRY CLASS The Outdoors Ohio gang is off to the shooting range at Great Lakes Outdoor Supply in Middlefield, Ohio. Joe and D’Arcy along with family and friends, want to test their marksmanship skills with some popular handguns and learn more about shooting safety from instructors who teach a comprehensive shooting course needed to obtain a Concealed Carry Permit.
SHOW #16: EAST HARBOR – PART 1 Joe and D’Arcy get together with tournament bass fishing pro Frank Scalish of Cleveland Heights, Ohio to cast for largemouth bass on East Harbor, a traditional bass fishing hot spot on Western Lake Erie for almost a century. The bass fishing is great, and so are the historic film clips from the era when anglers rented row boats for a day of catching bass, northern pike and panfish on East Harbor, now home to marinas and Lake Erie sport fishing and pleasure boats.
SHOW #17: EAST HARBOR – PART 2 Joe and D’Arcy continue to banter with tournament bass fishing pro Frank Scalish of Cleveland Heights, Ohio as they cast for largemouth bass on East Harbor, a traditional bass fishing hot spot on Western Lake Erie for almost a century. Frank gives the guys some great tips and the viewers get a glimpse of fishing history as D’Arcy interviews local marina legend Bob Brown Sr. of Channel Grove Marina.
SHOW #18: SOUTHWEST OHIO FISHING HOLES D’Arcy enjoys a leisurely day of small stream and pond fly fishing, chasing smallmouth and largemouth bass, and bluegills with noted Ohio fly angler and expert fly tier Jerry Darkes. Joe gives viewers some advice about matched tackle.
SHOW #19: EARLY GOOSE The big Canada geese are flying, and Joe and D’Arcy get an early start on the day hunting with the Crooked River Guide Service. Guides John Beckwith and Brian Laux have the ground blinds set up on a small Summit County pond. The talented callers soon have the big geese coming in for some great early season hunting action.
SHOW #20: OHIO CATFISH Growing up, Joe’s family nicknamed him “Catfish Joe”. Joe and D’Arcy spend a long night on the shoreline of Tappan Lake in southeast Ohio with Chad Harmon, the local catfish king, learning to throw a cast net for bait and then going to school on Chad’s techniques for hooking and landing trophy flatheads, and channel catfish. A long night with no luck! D’Arcy then visits the NEOCATS tournament weigh-in at Tappan Lake and witnesses flathead catfish weighing almost 50 pounds that are caught and released.
